There are two versions of the CoolHouse. The Cool Alphabet House and the Cool Theme House.
The Cool Alphabet House’s ‘windows’ are turned into pockets with bright letters of the alphabet clearly visible. Every pocket can store cards with words that start with the letter that is on the window-pocket. (For instance, the word ‘crocodile’ goes into pocket ‘C’.)
The letters are in two different colours, divided into vowels and consonants. (Some languages do not have the same letters in their alphabet as the English alphabet has, and the new letters can therefore be coloured differently, as it is clearly visible in the picture.)
The Cool Theme House has the same design and function as the Cool Alphabet House. The only difference is that the cards are grouped under different topics. For instance, in the pocket ‘fruit’ we can find the words: a banana, a cherry...
The combined use of the cards and the houses functions as a unique and high quality picture dictionary and a library for the young, with one exceptional advantage: the words can be taken out, held in the children’s hands and played with. The level of its use depends on children’s age, knowledge, abilities and previously developed skills.
At the first stage of learning, their use is focused on recognising letters and words without forcing children to use their motoric abilities too soon. At the same time, children start to understand the sequence of the letters of the alphabet and the structure of a dictionary, while also grouping words into topics according to their meaning through activities that necessitate finding the words and placing them into the correct pocket in either of the houses. These activities enable children to work independently and rely on their own skills, thus developing their self-esteem. For these kinds of exercises, our CoolDoodles are just what you need. On the other hand, the teacher is left with more free time to be able to focus on organising and evaluating the children.
In higher grades, the tasks are upgraded. Children may copy the words onto the correct place (next to a correct illustration, etc.), or into the correct gap (in gap-filling type tasks).
